2010 Vancouver Island Salmon Classic Confirmed!

November 24th, 2009

With great excitement the announcement that the 2010 Vancouver Island Salmon Classic is confirmed!

The immediate response from participants who wanted to re-register the same day the 2009 event ended was a wonderful indication of this events World Class success amongst some of the best salt water anglers.

The question was posed by Officials though, how do we follow up such successful  event going into just a second year?

After many long discussions the answer was keeping few teams, refining the experiences of the event and most importantly, MORE PRIZES!

The 2010 Vancouver Island Salmon Classic boasts some of the highest cash prizes starting with a $100,000 first prize, $50,000 second prize, $25,000 third prize, $10,000 forth prize and entry into the 2011 derby for 5th place!

With 2 teams being reserved for top sponsors and with increased sponsorship across the board, more prizes will be abundant.

Vancouver Island continues to be the morst abundant and diverse salmon fishing region in the world and the Vancouver Island Salmon Classic is the best way to highlight this wonderful sport.

2009 Vancouver Island Salmon Classic is a Success!

September 11th, 2009

The Vancouver Island Salmon Classic’s inaugural $175,000 fishing derby came to a dramatic completion on Saturday, September 5th with the top 2 prizes going to 1 skilled and very fortunate team from Victoria BC. ‘N-Joy Fishing Charters’.

Team N-Joy Fishing walked away with the $100,000 first prize catching a 40.6lb Chinook Salmon which nudged their previous days catch, a hefty 37.8lb Chinook Salmon off of top spot, earning the team another $50,000 second place prize.

The Winner’s excitement was palpable with their overall $150,000 in winnings! Both team members complemented the derby founder Matthew Mackenzie with a well organized all-inclusive exclusive event that kept the avid anglers housed, fed and refreshed with the donation of beer from Victoria’s own Lighthouse Brewing Company.

The third place prize was also a close call with only 6 ounces separating third and second prizes.

Team No Bananas of Port Renfrew landed a beautiful 37.2lb Chinook Salmon earning their team $25,000 and team Captain Trevor Zboyovsky was the first to donate $1000 to the local Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society.

The success of this world-class event is now official and teams have already started lining up for the second year of the Vancouver Island Salmon Classic which was hosted by the Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina.

Organizers of this event worked very hard to minimize the impact on local fish stocks by encouraging the safe release of non contending fish and will be looking for live release options in the 2010 season.

Salmon Classic Derby Day 2

September 5th, 2009

Another big fish caught early this morning has taken the lead (40.6lbs)!  But the lead remains with the same team, #35!  They have caught $150,000 worth of fish if they are able to maintain the lead, however the day is young and there are bigger fish being caught today more frequently than yesterday.  Check out the real time leader board as the event unfolds at www.salmonclassic.ca Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina has seen non stop action since Derby participants arrived on Thursday afternoon.  Tonight, everyone will be celebrating the experience at the awards dinner as the event is brought to a close.

Salmon Classic Derby Day 1

September 4th, 2009

An early start to the day saw the Sooke Harbour Marina empty out just prior to 6am.  Boats left single file to the starting point just outside the harbour beyond Whiffen Spit.  The horn blew at 6am for the start of the first annual Vancouver Island Salmon Classic.  This has truly been a world class event with fish being brought in the first day between 30 and 40 pounds.  You can check out the leaderboard at www.fishingderbyonline.com These top three are likely to change as the event moves forward over the next day.  The biggest fish will likely be 40+ pounds so it is still anyones game!  Teams have been very strategic in spending as little time at the dock as possible, big fish are brought in, weighed and the teams are right back on the water dropping their lures.  All the staff of Sooke Harbour Resort & Marina are having a blast watching all this unfold.

Vancouver Island Salmon Classic

September 4th, 2009

There was a lot of action last night as the remainder of competitors checked into the resort.  Lighthouse Brewing Company provided beer for the welcome reception and into the night through dinner.  Sooke Harbour Resort was a buzz with the energy generated from the Salmon Classic Derby.  As you walked through the resort you could hear teams huddled on there townhouse patios, or around a keg, talking strategy for the coming two days of fishing.  An early wake up call had competitors in bed at a reasonable hour in anticipation of the days to come.  You can watch the action unfold at www.fishingderbyonline.com , to see the leaders changing as fish are brought in!

Kayaking and a VERY close experience with Killer Whales in Sooke, BC

August 11th, 2009

This is a great egsample of some of the sights Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina has to offer 15 minutes away.  Follow this video link to see two colleagues from Sooke Harbour Resort have a VERY close encounter with killer whales.  These two are still shaking from this short trip!!  Maybe not the best trip for everyone, but just goes to show the possibilities are endless out here!

Living the Life!

August 6th, 2009

Another great day at Sooke Harbour Resort.  A foggy morning, burns off early afternoon.  Steaming crab I caught off the marina wharf, smoking salmon I fought out of the ocean, socializing with friends… what a life!  Nothing beats oceanfront resort living.
